CHAPTER 20

Who in the hell was ringing his bell and banging on the door at this time of night? And in the middle of a pandemic when everyone was supposed to be on lockdown? Jason reached out to grab the remote, pausing to stroke the dress Rowan had forgotten. He’d draped over the back of the settee to create the illusion she was still with him. Touching the delicate lace wasn’t as much fun as it had been with her in it. He paused the video he’d been watching, an encore performance of The Nutcracker. That wasn’t as enjoyable as it had been last night either.

He flipped over to the security feed. The Tobin brothers? Really? Well, they never had believed that rules applied to them, so why should tonight be any different? At least they were wearing face shields. He put on his mask and went to open the door.

“Hey, guys, this is a...”

BJ and Knox, at six foot one and six foot five respectively, towered over his five-foot-eight frame. Each grabbed a forearm, picked him up until his feet dangled under him, and walked him backward into the kitchen. It was like being back in high school.

They’d obviously found out about his date with Rowan, but how? “Wait! Guys! I can explain, but remember, brothers for life!”

They plunked him down unceremoniously on the stool where Rowan had sat. Flanked by Quinn and Shane, Riley shoved his phone into Jason’s face. “Yeah, brothers for life, but your life is going to be pretty damned short unless you can explain this.”

Riley’s well-deserved reputation as the family diplomat evaporated as Jason took the phone. His hand shook as he swiped through the news article that had his fraternity brothers in such foul moods.

“Aw, fuck. When did this hit?”

“So you’re not denying it?” Shane asked. The dude was a full foot taller than him, but Jason had never been afraid. Until now. That, plus BJ’s helicopter meant no one would ever find his body.

“We had a date last night. I fed her an outrageously delicious feast from Shanty Irish.”

BJ grunted. “Thanks for the business. We’re scraping bottom.”

Maybe not having the money to invest in a franchise of his own had been a blessing in disguise.

“And?” Quinn’s booming voice bounced off the hard surfaces.

“And we watched The Nutcracker.”

“She’s always loved the ballet,” Knox admitted.

“So how does dinner and the ballet translate into her walking out of your house this morning wearing your scrubs under Great-Grandma Tobin’s silver fox stole?” Shane wanted to know. “Serena has worn that stole to every Nutcracker performance since she was eight. There are hundreds of pictures of her in it all over the internet. And this afternoon, the latest one hit.”

Jason enlarged the screen to inspect the photo the rideshare driver had taken, the name Akerman clearly visible. “I wanted to drive her home, but she said it was too dangerous. That we couldn’t risk being seen together. Not until she’d graduated.” He tossed Riley’s phone on the counter and dug into his pocket for his.
